Harvesting water and minerals from waste slurries with supercritical water oxidation https://www.chemengonline.com/supercritical-water-oxidation/ https://www.chemengonline.com/supercritical-water-oxidation/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=268273 A wastewater treatment plant operated by Orange County (Calif.) Sanitation District is the site of the first installment, at a commercial facility, of a new supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) technology capable of producing clean water and minerals from waste slurries. The clean-technology startup 374Water Inc., originating from Duke University, developed the technology, known as AirSCWO.

Fouling-immune membrane available for brackish-water RO applications https://www.chemengonline.com/fouling-immune-membrane/ https://www.chemengonline.com/fouling-immune-membrane/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=262602 In November 2023, the first commercial test was initiated for a novel, fouling-immune membrane for brackish-water reverse osmosis (BWRO) applications through an early-access program. Membrane developer ZwitterCo says its membrane is fouling-immune in cases where fouling of membranes by natural organic matter necessitates frequent membrane cleaning. By enabling restoration of membrane performance by simple water flushing, the new membrane reduces maintenance downtime and lengthens membrane lifespans.

Slurry-processing system produces dry solids, aqueous NH3 in a single step https://www.chemengonline.com/slurry-processing-system/ https://www.chemengonline.com/slurry-processing-system/#respond Wed, 01 Nov 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=258503 A new technology designed for improving the environmental footprint associated with processing liquid waste streams containing suspended or dissolved solids has been developed by Sedron Technologies and tradenamed Varcor. The technology separates, dries and sterilizes solid material from a liquid slurry, while recovering valuable nutrients, in a single step. Outputs of the process are pathogen-free solids (class A-EQ depending on the application), along with a concentrated aqueous solution of nutrients, such as ammonia, that can be used as feedstock for agricultural fertilizer manufacturing, and clean water for reuse.

Treating Wastewater in Bioprocessing Facilities https://www.chemengonline.com/treating-wastewater-in-bioprocessing-facilities/ https://www.chemengonline.com/treating-wastewater-in-bioprocessing-facilities/#respond Fri, 01 Sep 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=254362 Wastewater generated from bioprocessing facilities is heavily regulated in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA; Washington, D.C.; www.epa.gov) and various state laws. The primary goal of these regulations is to prevent contaminants and toxins that are present in bioprocessing-facility wastewater from entering sources of drinking water, which then must be treated by municipal water-treatment plants. An additional emerging area of interest focuses on water reuse — for both regulatory reasons and economic ones — because the cost to treat and reuse some wastewater can be far less than the cost of starting with untreated water.

Commercial debut for a batch reverse-osmosis system https://www.chemengonline.com/reverse-osmosis-system/ https://www.chemengonline.com/reverse-osmosis-system/#respond Sat, 01 Jul 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=250387 Earlier this year, Salinity Solutions Ltd. signed an agreement with Te-Tech Process Solutions to manufacture commercial water-purification systems based on batch reverse-osmosis (RO). This technology, originally characterized and developed at the University of Birmingham and commercialized by spin-off company Salinity Solutions, is said to use 50% less energy and generate 80% less waste than conventional RO, while purifying up to 98% of the water.
