Facts At Your Fingertips: Understanding Energy Efficiency in a Fired Heater https://www.chemengonline.com/facts-at-your-fingertips-understanding-energy-efficiency-in-a-fired-heater/ https://www.chemengonline.com/facts-at-your-fingertips-understanding-energy-efficiency-in-a-fired-heater/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=278583 Process heating systems are critical parts of chemical process industries (CPI) facilities. Unfortunately, the reliable, efficient operation of utility systems is often taken for granted, and they receive little engineering attention. This is perhaps understandable, since these systems play a supporting role to a generally more complex, attention-demanding process. However, utility systems are inherently close to the energy consumption of a facility, and their correct operation is critical to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions of a process.

On-demand electric heat can reach near-flame temperatures https://www.chemengonline.com/industrial-heating/ https://www.chemengonline.com/industrial-heating/#respond Sat, 01 Jun 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=274400 Electrification provides an avenue for industrial decarbonization, but many electric-heating options cannot handle the high temperatures and scale required for industrial use. Electrified Thermal Solutions (ETS) has taken a new approach to industrial heating through its JouleHive thermal battery, which can achieve near-flame temperatures continuously without degradation. The heart of JouleHive is the company’s proprietary electrically conductive fire bricks (E-bricks).

Reducing CO2 emissions from pig iron production https://www.chemengonline.com/reducing-co2-emissions/ https://www.chemengonline.com/reducing-co2-emissions/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2024 00:00:00 +0000 https://www.chemengonline.com/?p=266795 Researchers of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the SMS group GmbH have developed a new process to reduce CO2 emissions from worldwide steel production by several hundred million tons per year. It is based on modernizing blast-furnace technology with moderate investments. The process was developed by KIT’s Institute for Chemical Technology and Polymer Chemistry (ITCP), in cooperation with the SMS group and its subsidiary Paul Wurth S.A., and KIT’s startup omegadot software & consulting GmbH. The process was demonstrated and validated at a pilot plant (photo) at Dillinger Hüttenwerke, Saarland.
