Loosen bulk solids that have solidified during storage and shipment

The Hydraulic Bulk Bag Conditioner (photo) features two hydraulic rams with specially contoured end plates to press opposing sides of bulk bags. An optional hydraulically actuated, variable-height turntable allows in-frame bag rotation and conditioning of bulk bags at varying heights. "The new conditioner is intended for bulk bags containing hygroscopic chemicals, certain types of spice blends, heat-sensitive products and other materials prone to solidifying to the point at which pneumatically actuated flow-promotion accessories integral to bulk bag dischargers are inefficient," says David Boger, sales manager. - Flexicon, Bethlehem, Pa.

A quick-clean screener for thorough washdowns

The Centri-Sifter centrifugal screener model "GO" (photo) features a cantilevered shaft with two, externally mounted bearings between the screening chamber and motor drive, allowing all internals to slide freely from the shaft end for cleaning, screen changes or inspection. Wide spacing between the bearings, a large-diameter shaft and a flexible-shaft coupling combine to prevent vibration, even at high speeds under heavy, imbalanced loads, says the manufacturer. The screener is available with compliance to several U.S. and European sanitary standards, with nylon monofilament, woven wire or wedgewire screen cylinders. Configurations are offered for continuous inline operation with dilute-phase pneumatic conveying systems, as well as for gravity-fed applications. - Kason Corp., Millburn, N.J.

Etching creates a bondable fluoropolymer tubing

This company now offers onsite etching to create a bondable surface on PTFE, FEP and PFA (photo). Because the lubricity of the fluoropolymer tube surface hampers its bondability, etching is required to alter the tube surface in order to allow adhesion. Etching services are available on the inner or outer diameter, or both, of this company's products. In the process, etching chemicals are used to modify the surface of the fluoropolymer materials in order to enhance the bondability. The chemical reaction between the etch and the fluorine in the tubing eliminates the smoothness of the tube, stripping the fluorine and leaving the tube surface rough. Once the surface lubricity has been altered, the tubing can be bonded to almost any surface. Etching does alter the color of the tube and ranges from light to dark brown. The color, however, does not determine the strength of the etch. Unlike natural fluoropolymer tubing, etched tubing must be stored in black plastic bags to keep out light and retain the effects of chemical alteration. Offered in sizes from 0.004-4-in. dia., etched tubing is a custom, made-to-order product. - Parker-Texloc, div. of Parflex, Fort Worth, Tex.

Transfer powders safely with this system

Powdered products that need to be contained to avoid contamination to the workplace environment can be transferred by a self-contained Powder Transfer System (PTS; photo). Designed for products such as pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and metal powders, the totally sealed pneumatic system requires no external filters or vents, and allows dust-free charging of powder directly into closed vessels, including those under vacuum or pressure. The system employs a sealed transfer vessel that is connected to the feed container and mounted on the vessel to be charged. Product is moved into the transfer vessel and then charged into the receiving vessel with no escape of dust or air into the environment. The PTS is equipped with four valves, one each for product inlet and outlet, and vacuum and pressure source. Inside the PTS cover is a membrane that can filter particles down to 1 µm. - De Dietrich Process Systems, Inc., Mountainside, N.J.

Achieve various levels of water quality with this filter

The Automated Disc Filter (ADF, photo) is an automatic, self-cleaning, plastic disc filter. In this system, water enters through an inlet pipe at the bottom of the filter housing, where "fin plate" blades force the water to enter the chamber with a vortex effect. This effect causes dirt particles to collect on the upper wall of the filter chamber, where they remain until the next flushing cycle. As the water flows from the outside of the disc stack to the inside, grooves on the discs catch the suspended material. Clean, filtered water flows of the the filter from the center outlet. The system is cleaned by reverse flow, which can be triggered by pressure differential, time, or both. - Amiad Filtration Systems, Oxnard, Calif.

Simplify operations with this new liquid-analysis platform

The Model 1056 single/dual input analyzer allows the user to choose from any combination of measurements: pH/ORP/ISE; resistivity/conductivity; percent concentration; chlorine (free, total, monochloramine, pH-independent free chlorine); oxygen; ozone and temperature. To simplify operation in the field, the Model 1056 features the largest high-contrast LCD display available on a line-operated instrument. Four process variables, or diagnostic parameters, are displayed simultaneously. The placement of variables on the screen is easily configured based on the user's requirements. Embedded predictive diagnostics provide warnings and faults when the sensors or instrument are not performing to specification. A push of the diagnostics button reveals troubleshooting and maintenance messages. - Emerson Process Management, St. Louis, Mo.

Cool very hot solids with this innovative system

The new High Temperature Bulk Powder Cooling Model (photo), launched at Powtech, has an innovative design using horizontal water-cooled tubes that minimizes thermal stresses and accommodates thermal expansion, says the manufacturer. As a result, the system is capable of cooling bulk solids with temperatures up to 1,000°C. Compared to the alternative plate design, the new design has the benefit that the geometry of the tube is perfectly uniform and provides an even temperature distribution throughout the tube wall, thus avoiding hot spots and local stresses, says the firm. The high-temperature model is suitable for processing bulk solids from metallurgical processes for metal recovery, reactor discharges in the petrochemicals industry, boiler ash in fluidized-bed combustion chambers and catalyst production processes. - Hall 9, Stand 418 - Bulkflow Technologies, Inc., Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Typical applications include the production of pellets from recycling of plastics, stabilizers, chemicals, electronics waste and polyurethane foam (from refrigerators) as well as for converting byproducts from wood into pellets for fuel. - Hall 9, Stand 235 - Andritz Sprout, AG, Mettmann, Germany

edlinks.chemengonline.com/6893-404

Determine powder-flow behavior with a single instrument

With the Revolution powder analyzer (photo), operators can determine a powder's process behavior by measuring - in one system - the interactions of the many factors (size, density, moisture content, chemical composition) that normally had to be measured independently from each other. Material to be analyzed is placed into a rotating drum. As the drum rotation rate is gradually increased (over the range from 0.1 to 200 rpm), a digital camera using back-light illumination takes images at up to 30 frames/s. Software then analyzes the collected images to determine how the powder's behavior changes over time. All powder-behavior tests, including flowability, granulation, caking and fluidization, can be performed in a single device. - Hall 7, Stand 121 - PS-Prozesstechnik GmbH, Basel, Switzerland

Measure high particle concentrations without dilution

The Welas 2100 FL (photo) is an aerosol spectrometer that uses scattered light to simultaneously determine particle size and concentration. The unit features the world's smallest sensor, and the combination of white- and scattered-light detection in a 90 deg. angle enables the particle diameter to be determined in a gas or a liquid - without the use of mathematical algorithms. Because of the small optical volume used for the measurement, the unit is able to measure very high concentrations (up to 100,000 particles/mL) without having to dilute the sample. The device has a measurement range from 0.5 to 40 µm (Latex in water). - Hall 10, Stand 214 - Palas GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany
